Earth: 2088

By: Bryan Taningco

Can you imagine a world without electricity? A world without Fossil Fuels? How will our industries work? How can transportation work? How will we communicate?  I bet most of us will answer “No”, this generation; our generation lived a luxurious life brought about by the abundance of these resources thus, we use them relentlessly and without reserve. According to the law of Economics, all resources are scarce and therefore, are subjects of depletion.

Let me present you with an impending reality that will unfold 15 years from now. At about 2030 mankind will deplete almost half of their known oil deposits; this event will set the world in the verge of panic as super power nations such as United States, Russia and China squander to find alternative sources of energy. World economies will drop due the high cost of producing goods; the latter super power nations will start to seize territories speculated to possess their required resources. The world will once again be in the brink of war. Fast forward to 2088, all non-renewable resources are assumed to be depleted by this year; different hypothesizes were presented regarding the fate of mankind by then.  Some would say that we have adapted to the use of renewable energy, with the solar power nation of Germany reigning as a Super power nation; while others hypothesized that we have turned to the vastness of space to answer our cry for resources, colonizing nearby planets such as Mars, mounting planetary mining expeditions in search for resources. Darker hypotheses, on the other hand take its roots from the so called “World War III” a war for territory and resources participated by China, U.S.A. and Russia which will, as speculated by this dark theory, lead to a nuclear apocalypse and a restart of civilization.

Too much for speculations and theories right? But the truth is, this might be the impending future and now, the question boils down to this; “How can we safeguard a bright and safe future?” I believe the answer lies upon all of us. How you consume and conserve the resources you enjoy today.

I hope that upon reading this article, you have acquired insight and responsibility of the future. I bet that you would now think twice before leaving that light bulb “On” even in broad daylight. You wouldn’t want a World War III right?
