A Vagabond’s Dream and A Conquistadores' Heart

By: Bryan Lord Taningco

I have a dream, the dream of traveling and visiting places around the world. But why travel? Is it only for the sole purpose of sight-seeing and status ensembles?  For me traveling means indulging yourself in acquiring first-hand knowledge, knowledge not from books or the accounts of others; living stories where you-yourself is the protagonist, weaving your own brand of Adventure. Some landmarks I would like to visit are the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, Russia's Red square and Vatican to name a few. If only traveling was free then you'd probably never see me again.

Back in the old days, Vagabonds existed; Wanderers with no permanent residence. People might take them for beggars, my thoughts are, money might not be the reason for seeing Vagabonds; some of them search for answers, others seek for the meaning of life. They might look like they have nothing for the Gold they carry is not in material things, the wealth they carry is the wealth of first hand knowledge and adventure. Even Buddha at some point was a vagabond and so was Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda. You see, traveling is about enlightenment, a journey not only of the body but also of the mind and soul.

Fast forward to the Age of Exploration, Conquistadores explored the New World, their reasons for exploring might involve any of the following: God, Glory or Gold. Yet one can admire the courage these men have. The courage to explore the uncharted destinations of the world of their time. The courage to sail the seas of uncertainty. The courage to seek treasures shrouded by mystery and danger. These are the men who have gazed at death's eyes yet were able to come back and tell their tales. Men of Adventure and daring exploits, if only I  had the chance to be one of them; then I would have woven the grandest tale.

Today, the power of traveling is granted by three things; Money, a passport and Time. Traveling now is a privilege enjoyed only by the elites. Its is funny to think that you have to wait in line to renew a Passport, allowing you to visit members of your own species across artificially conceived borders albeit back in the old Days the things you'll only need are courage, a self goal and an oppurtunity.

Perhaps I only have A Vagabond’s Dream and A Conquistadores' Heart..... Perhaps....
