The Needs to a Successful Teaching

By: Frances Zia A. Pidlaoan
Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Social Studies
The teaching profession is a tough and complicated job especially in handling different kinds of students. There’s a time that we need to get their attention and cooperation in the learning tasks especially when the tasks are difficult or uninteresting for them. The strategy that should be used to engage the students in the class is an everyday struggle of every teacher. But, as a future Social Studies teacher, I learned three points on how can teachers encourage student participation that is very applicable not just in Social studies but for sure, in any subject.
Be Humanistic. It is very important that we don’t just touch the cognitive part of the students for us to impart learning but also their affective domain where we can impart values and at the same time considering their experiences, capabilities and skills. Successful teaching will prevail if a teacher tries to incorporate students’ past experiences to the present material and in that way, a teacher can observe student participation whenever they share personal experiences related to the topic. Integrating the personal experiences of the students to what we will want them to learn is important where you can also engage the student to participate in class and this will be also the time where a teacher can get to know the students better. By being humanistic, we don’t just teach the students, we also learn from them through the personal experiences they share and at the same time inspire them to be confident and value their experiences.
Integrate current issues to the lesson. A lesson without the application to the present situation is definitely boring. As teachers we should be updated to what is happening in the present times from simple news down to big current events and issues. The teacher can integrate these current events to the topic so that students’ learning will be meaningful and they will be able to see opportunities on how to apply what they have learned. And also, integrating present issues to the lesson will give the students the opportunity to discover the importance of the topic presented them. One more thing is that, if our students see that current events are very important, we help them develop the ability to be observant and updated to the present news.
Accept your Students. Want to have a successful teaching? It’s simple: accept your students starting from who they are down to their capabilities and skills. A teacher who accepts the students for what they can and cannot do will be able to teach equally, appropriate and favorable to the students. As teachers we should open the doors to our students and see them as children with full of talents and potentials and our task is to bring out the best in them. We are theirs second parents and one of our responsibilities to them is to show that they are being accepted, recognized and valued for who they are regardless of their differences. The fact that we accept and appreciate them, we are really helping them to build their confidence and trust with themselves.
It’s really great to become a teacher but this profession or should I say passion comes with a big responsibility which is to make the students acquire values and see the importance of learning as well as to develop the best things that we can bring out to them.
