Sic Parvis Magna

By: Bryan Lord Taningco

Movies and video games are big parts of today’s pop culture; both are well known recreational activities favoured by the youth. Their theme ranges from plain action to suspense albeit some may seem pointless, others tell the stories of historical people and events even of fictional characters who perform daring tales that are almost too real.

Growing up, I’ve always fancied the movies like Indiana Jones, National Treasure, The Mummy, Jurassic Park and Tomb raider; these fictional adventure flicks influenced me to develop an interest for Social Science. Specifically, Archaeology and History; I remember the days where I will do research on interesting people, objects or landmarks that caught my curiosity during watching a film. I will then imagine myself embarking on such grand adventures, the danger, the mystery and the glory; all these things that I wanted to experience, a vague object of historical and mystical significance, an ancient prophesy, a psychotic antagonist, and a beautiful and equally sassy damsel in distress; the perfect formula for saving the day and getting the girl. That is when my sense of adventure was born.

Fast forward to my Teenage days, Video games became my greatest influence but unlike the boys of my age I never fancied the gameplay or graphics that a video game boasts, I’ve always been after the story and the characters; you might see it funny but I perform video game reviews in a similar way I would critic a book. There is always a hidden Ideology, an origin story, a historical reference; and I’ve always pledge my life in uncovering this video game secrets. I enjoyed it, Video game titles like Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, Civilization, Rome: Total War, Bioshock and Age of Empire; hold historical information that can match any History Textbook and of course I have done some sorting out, call it paranoia but I see to it that every information that I get is factual ergo I also do some extra research.

I can say that Movies and Videogames gave me the edge on some of my classes, one reason why I don’t study is because some of the facts taught to us today, I’ve already knew from Movies and Video games. Also, both Medias introduced me to popular and historical figures such as Machiavelli, Da Vinci, Sir Francis Drake and Shakespeare to name a few. And it did not stop there, because of the curiosity brought to me by movies and videogames it led me to read the writings of these popular figures, The prince of Machiavelli, Hamlet of Shakespeare, The Art of War of Sun Tsu and Atlas Shrugged of Ayn Rand. These are the fuel of my ideologies today, the lenses of my perspective.

These are my Inspiration and with that I would like to end with a quote from Sir Francis Drake of the video game entitled: Uncharted.
