Skies of Arcadia

By: Bryan Lord Taningco

Life in the city is very tiresome, driven by the relentless cry for efficiency that our modern society demands; there is simply no room for thrill and recreation. Urban life brings us to edge of boredom; subconsciously we are turned into slaves damned to follow mechanise routines and to act as consumptionist  robotic figures which only submits to conformity, thus we begun to tear our connection with nature.

To rebuild that connection is to experience nature itself, moving away from the confines of the urban society even for a little while and delving deep to the country side, taking away the privilege and convenience of the city; living a simple life. There are dozens of ways to be one with nature; there is camping, hiking, cycling, spelunking and fishing to name a few. Traverse mountains, cross rivers and sail seas; Nature provides all the resources and recreation you’ll need, if only you’ll be willing to pack your bags and step out of the door. Why not go on an adventure?

Literature speaks of a place where man and nature are in tune, a world of idyllic bliss; Arcadia. A Utopian society of poetic shaped proportions associated with bountiful natural splendor and harmony. It is seen as a lost, Edenic form of life, contrasting to the progressive nature of our modern society. I’m not saying that we should strive for the fulfillment of Arcadia; such promises are unattainable and far too ideal. But what we can do is to appreciate the things we have, to take care of what we have left and to nurture nature; In hopes that one day we might at least have a glimpse of the skies of Arcadia.
