Teaching Geography: Making Students More Interested

By: Cheriel Cometa

Geography is broad area of study but the topics included here were very interesting.
But for those students who do not have their interest in Geography, we as teacher should always keep them involved in the class as much as possible. We should set activities that really require students’ active involvement. We should teach them to love what they are doing, be more involved and have the desire to explore new ideas.
I have list of some ways that will able the students to be more engaged in the learning process.
First, is the hands-on activity such as experimentation and projects. Using this will let the students to have not just of a mastery of the topic but rather a clear understanding of what has been taught. Learning by doing is one of the best ways to learn because most students feel that they are assuming responsibilities.
Second, consider the students diversity or differences, as teachers, diversity should always be considered in every part of the teaching learning process. Make sure that their special abilities were valued by the teacher. From this, considering the students diversity or differences will make them more engaged in the teaching learning process.
The third one is because most of the students thought that geography was not a good subject, it is a challenged for the teacher to make them believe that they can. Make the learning fun with full of learnings. We can see how effective the teacher is.

Uniqueness

By: Cheriel Cometa

Culture defines the society and gives identity. Through culture it shapes how people live and how they interact with each other. They have the same or common beliefs, and is united by social relationships.
The Philippines itself has made its own mark in other countries. One example are the fiestas that were held in different places to commemorate their patron saints, showcase the products that they are known for and give thanks for a prosperous year.
Each place in the Philippines has different festivals and different products to showcase. Celebrating fiesta is one of the most enjoyable traditions of the society we are living.
From this we should be able to appreciate what a certain place has.
As member of the society, we should not just be in the events just to take pictures showing that you came there. It is good that we also know why they are featuring these products and how these affects the members of the society. We must learn to appreciate their unique traditions that they have.

Climate Change: Effects To The Biodiversity

By: Gheriel Cometa

As we can see, Philippines is an archipelago comprising 7, 100 islands. It is very evident that we have different species of animals here in the country.  Our country has different animals which can adapt to the Philippines climate.
Because of the presence of those species, the people’s tendency is to catch it for entertainment or killing it because they need it in order to survive and it somehow distracts them. This has been a threat for the animals.
The fact that we are presented by different kind of species has been a challenge for us. We must be aware that climate change has been a major factor which makes the species endangered. Because of climate change, some migratory birds don’t come for a season because the climate that we have is not that suitable place-unlike before to stay in that area. From that, we can see that the effects of changes will have a big impact on them.
So, what is the goal/s of the teacher?

As teacher, we should teach the students to be more aware of the place that they are in. they don’t live alone. There are also species in the world that needs to survive.
We should also teach them that they should be aware of their actions especially when it comes to the environment. What we get from the environment should not be taken for granted. Though it is free, we should be able to practice the do’s and don’ts because in every actions, there will always be an effect to the environment.

What should a Geography teacher be?

By:Cheriel Cometa

A Geography teacher should be:
First, be aware of the students’ differences. The fact that geography is not that interesting subject for other students, it is the tasks of the teacher to make the students involved. Because they have differences, it is important that the teacher consider the students diversity every time.
Second, must know how to tell stories. A teacher is considered to a good story teller when he is able to connect the different parts of the lesson, connecting it to different aspects, area or discipline. A good story teller teacher is someone who is knowledgeable about the subject.  From that, the students will have a clear understanding of what has been taught.
Third, he must be reflective. In teaching,  reflective is required because as teachers, it is a way to improve oneself and in the teaching process. Reflecting means that you care about your students. You care in a way that you reflect for them.   In the teaching learning process, it is a must to evaluate your instructions that you have given to your students.
Over all, teaching will always be a challenge for teachers because of each students’ differences.

Traveling!

By: Ivory Pena

Every experience we had there is a lesson to earn. The idea in teaching geography is to let our learners share their experiences to the class. Experience is the best teacher, so as a teacher we can touch the humanistic view of our learners. Even the most silent student in our class will unexpectedly raise their hands and share the experience he had on his travel. Knowing the fact that learners now are very adventurous, it is valid that the teacher conducts some activities that make learners to be creative in their own way. Extrapolating their ideas becomes one of the great motivations for the learners. Traveling in different places will also be helpful to us as future teacher because we can teach easily the course we are handling. It will make connections to the topic, even it is a history. Upon seeing the culture, landmarks and everything we will consider our lesson more reliable and align to the experiences of the learners.  It is in our hands to make our learners engage in the places where they live. Hence, as a future educator of Social studies course we should be able to keep in mind that traveling is one way to enhance our own capabilities in teaching Social studies discipline.
